How to Set Up Your Have Freedom Email in an Email App

Overview

You can use your Have Freedom Hosting email address with nearly any modern email application on your computer, phone, or tablet.

This includes applications such as:

  • Microsoft Outlook

  • Mozilla Thunderbird

  • Apple Mail

  • Gmail

  • iOS Mail

  • Android email applications

  • Other applications that support standard IMAP and SMTP email

This article explains the general settings you'll need to connect your Have Freedom email account.

Tip: If you only need to check your email from a web browser, you do not need to configure an email application. See How to Access Your Have Freedom Email instead.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following information:

  • Your complete email address

  • Your email account password

  • Your domain name

  • An email application installed on your device

For example:

Email address: you@example.com

Password: Your email account password

If you don't know your email password, you may need to reset it through cPanel before continuing.

Recommended Settings

We recommend using IMAP for incoming email and SSL/TLS encryption whenever your email application supports it.

Incoming Mail — IMAP

Setting Value
Protocol IMAP
Server mail.yourdomain.com
Port 993
Security SSL/TLS
Username Your full email address
Password Your email account password

Replace yourdomain.com with the domain associated with your email address.

For example, if your email address is:

you@example.com

your incoming mail server would normally be:

mail.example.com

Outgoing Mail — SMTP

Setting Value
Protocol SMTP
Server mail.yourdomain.com
Port 465 or 587
Security SSL/TLS or STARTTLS, depending on the application
Authentication Required
Username Your full email address
Password Your email account password

If your email application asks whether the outgoing server requires authentication, select Yes.

Use the same email address and password you use for incoming mail.

IMAP vs. POP3

When setting up your email application, you may be asked whether you want to use IMAP or POP3.

IMAP — Recommended

IMAP keeps your email synchronized with the server.

This means that when you read, send, delete, or organize a message, those changes can be reflected across your other devices and Webmail.

We recommend IMAP for most users.

POP3

POP3 downloads email from the server to your device.

Depending on how your email application is configured, messages may be removed from the server after they are downloaded. This can make POP3 inconvenient if you regularly use multiple devices.

Use POP3 only if you specifically need its behavior or have a particular reason for doing so.

How to Set Up Your Account

The exact steps vary depending on the email application you're using, but the process is generally similar.

1. Open your email application

Open the email application you want to use.

Look for an option such as:

  • Add Account

  • Add Email Account

  • New Account

  • Set Up Email

  • Account Settings

2. Enter your email address

Enter your complete Have Freedom email address.

For example:

you@example.com

3. Enter your password

Enter the password associated with that email account.

Important: Your email password is not necessarily the same as your Have Freedom customer portal or cPanel password.

4. Select IMAP

If your application asks whether you want to use IMAP or POP3, select:

IMAP

If the application automatically detects your settings, allow it to continue.

If automatic configuration fails, select Manual Setup and enter the server settings shown above.

5. Configure the incoming server

Use:

Server: mail.yourdomain.com

Port: 993

Security: SSL/TLS

Username: Your complete email address

6. Configure the outgoing server

Use:

Server: mail.yourdomain.com

Port: 465 or 587

Security: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS

Authentication: Enabled

Username: Your complete email address

7. Save the account

Save or finish the account setup.

Your application should connect to the server and begin synchronizing your mailbox.

If you have a large mailbox, the initial synchronization may take some time.

Finding Your Exact Mail Settings in cPanel

Your cPanel account can provide the mail-server information configured for your specific email account.

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. Open Email Accounts.

  3. Locate the email address you want to configure.

  4. Click Connect Devices.

  5. Review the available configuration information.

cPanel provides the appropriate secure mail-client settings through this interface.

Tip: If the settings shown in cPanel differ from the generic examples in this article, use the settings provided by cPanel for your account.

Troubleshooting

I can receive email, but I can't send email

Check the following:

  • Make sure the outgoing server is configured correctly.

  • Make sure SMTP authentication is enabled.

  • Make sure you are using your full email address as the username.

  • Verify that you are using port 465 or 587.

  • Make sure SSL/TLS or STARTTLS is enabled as required by your application.

  • Confirm that your email password is correct.

I can send email, but I can't receive email

Check the following:

  • Make sure the incoming server is correct.

  • Make sure you're using IMAP with port 993.

  • Confirm that SSL/TLS is enabled.

  • Make sure your full email address is being used as the username.

  • Verify that your mailbox is not over its storage limit.

My email application says my password is incorrect

First, try logging into Webmail using the same email address and password.

If you cannot log into Webmail either, your email password may need to be reset.

If Webmail works but your email application does not, double-check the username and server settings in the application.

My application cannot find the server

Make sure you are using the correct mail server for your domain.

In most cases this will be:

mail.yourdomain.com

You can also check cPanel → Email Accounts → Connect Devices for the configuration information associated with your account.

If your domain's DNS settings have recently been changed, you may also need to allow time for those changes to propagate.

My email works on one device but not another

Compare the settings on both devices.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Username

  • Password

  • Incoming server

  • Incoming port

  • Outgoing server

  • Outgoing port

  • Encryption/security

  • SMTP authentication

One incorrectly configured setting can prevent a device from connecting properly.

Security Recommendations

For the best security and reliability:

  • Use IMAP unless you specifically need POP3.

  • Use SSL/TLS encryption whenever available.

  • Never share your email password.

  • Don't use the same password for multiple important accounts.

  • Keep your email application and operating system updated.

  • Remove old or unused devices that still have access to your mailbox.

Have Freedom Hosting recommends using secure SSL/TLS connections for mail clients.
