Uploading files via the cPanel to your website

How to Upload Files to Your Website Using cPanel File Manager

Overview

cPanel's File Manager allows you to manage the files stored on your Have Freedom Hosting account directly from your web browser.

You can use File Manager to:

  • Upload website files.

  • Download files.

  • Create folders.

  • Rename files and folders.

  • Delete files.

  • Move or copy files.

  • Edit text-based website files.

  • Change file permissions.

  • Manage your website without installing an FTP application.

For most simple file uploads, File Manager is the quickest and easiest option.

Before You Begin

You will need:

  • An active Have Freedom Hosting account.

  • Access to your cPanel account.

  • The files you want to upload.

  • A general understanding of where your website files should be stored.

For your primary domain, your website's document root will commonly be:

public_html

If you are working with an addon domain, subdomain, or another domain configured on your account, its document root may be different.

Opening File Manager

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. Locate the Files section.

  3. Click File Manager.

File Manager will open in a new page.

You will see the directories and files associated with your hosting account.

Understanding the File Manager

The File Manager interface contains several important areas.

Directory Navigation

The left side of the interface allows you to navigate between directories.

File Listing

The main area displays the files and folders within the directory you currently have open.

Action Toolbar

The toolbar provides options for managing files, including:

  • Upload

  • Download

  • Copy

  • Move

  • Rename

  • Edit

  • Delete

  • Extract

  • Compress

  • Change Permissions

The exact options available may vary depending on what you have selected.

Finding Your Website's Document Root

For many primary domains, website files are stored in:

public_html

Open the public_html directory to view the files associated with your primary website.

For example, a typical website may contain:

public_html/index.html

or:

public_html/index.php

Your website's document root can vary depending on how your domains are configured.

If you are unsure where a particular domain's files belong, check the domain configuration in cPanel before uploading anything.

Uploading a File

To upload a file:

  1. Open File Manager.

  2. Navigate to the directory where you want the file to be stored.

  3. Click Upload in the toolbar.

  4. Select the file from your computer.

  5. Wait for the upload to finish.

  6. Return to File Manager and refresh the directory.

The uploaded file should now appear in the directory.

Uploading Multiple Files

You can upload multiple files at once if your browser and the File Manager interface support it.

  1. Navigate to the destination directory.

  2. Click Upload.

  3. Select the files you want to upload.

  4. Wait for the uploads to complete.

  5. Return to File Manager and verify that the files are present.

For very large numbers of files, FTP or another transfer method may be more efficient.

Uploading a Website

If you have a website stored on your computer, you can upload its files through File Manager.

For a primary domain:

  1. Open File Manager.

  2. Open public_html.

  3. Click Upload.

  4. Upload your website files.

  5. Wait for the uploads to finish.

  6. Refresh File Manager.

  7. Visit your website and verify that it works.

Make sure your website's primary page is located in the correct directory.

For example:

public_html/index.html

or:

public_html/index.php

Uploading a ZIP File

Uploading a compressed ZIP file can be much faster than uploading hundreds or thousands of individual files.

For example, if your website consists of:

  • Hundreds of images

  • Multiple folders

  • Many CSS files

  • JavaScript files

  • PHP files

you can package them into a ZIP file and upload the ZIP archive.

Upload the ZIP file

  1. Open the destination directory.

  2. Click Upload.

  3. Select the ZIP file.

  4. Wait for the upload to complete.

  5. Return to File Manager.

Extract the ZIP file

  1. Select the uploaded ZIP file.

  2. Click Extract.

  3. Confirm the extraction location.

  4. Start the extraction.

  5. Wait for the process to complete.

  6. Verify that the website files are in the correct directory.

Important: Pay attention to the folder structure inside the ZIP file. If the ZIP contains a folder named website, extracting it into public_html may result in your files being located at public_html/website/ instead of directly inside public_html/.

Example: Uploading a Website Correctly

Suppose you have a website on your computer with this structure:

my-website/
├── index.html
├── about.html
├── css/
├── images/
└── js/

You want index.html to be the main page of:

https://example.com

The contents of my-website should be uploaded so that your server looks like:

public_html/
├── index.html
├── about.html
├── css/
├── images/
└── js/

You do not want:

public_html/
└── my-website/
    ├── index.html
    ├── about.html
    ├── css/
    ├── images/
    └── js/

unless you specifically want the website to be located at:

https://example.com/my-website/

Creating a New Folder

To create a folder:

  1. Navigate to the directory where you want the folder.

  2. Click + Folder or New Folder.

  3. Enter the folder name.

  4. Click Create New Folder.

For example, you might create:

images

inside:

public_html

resulting in:

public_html/images/

Renaming a File or Folder

To rename an item:

  1. Select the file or folder.

  2. Click Rename.

  3. Enter the new name.

  4. Confirm the change.

Be careful when renaming website files.

For example, changing:

index.html

to:

homepage.html

may cause your website's main page to stop loading automatically.

Moving a File or Folder

You can move files between directories using File Manager.

For example, you might move:

public_html/test.html

to:

public_html/pages/test.html

When moving website files, remember that changing their location may also change the URL used to access them.

Editing a File

File Manager includes basic editors that allow you to modify text-based files directly on the server.

This can be useful for small changes to:

  • HTML

  • CSS

  • JavaScript

  • PHP

  • Configuration files

  • .htaccess

Before editing an important file, create a backup whenever possible.

Warning: A syntax error in a PHP or configuration file can cause your website to stop working. If you are unsure what a file does, do not modify it.

Deleting Files

To delete a file or folder:

  1. Select the item.

  2. Click Delete.

  3. Confirm the deletion.

Some cPanel configurations allow deleted files to be moved to the Trash.

Important: Do not delete files simply because you don't recognize them. Website applications and hosting software may rely on files that are not immediately familiar.

If you are unsure whether a file is safe to remove, contact support before deleting it.

File Permissions

File Manager allows you to view and modify file permissions.

Permissions determine who can read, write, or execute files and directories.

You should generally leave permissions at their existing values unless you have a specific reason to change them.

Incorrect permissions can:

  • Prevent your website from working.

  • Cause application errors.

  • Prevent files from being accessed.

  • Create security vulnerabilities.

If an application requires a particular permission setting, follow the application's documentation or Have Freedom Hosting's instructions.

Common Problems

My Uploaded File Isn't Showing Up

If a file does not appear after uploading:

  1. Refresh File Manager.

  2. Verify that you uploaded it to the correct directory.

  3. Check that the upload completed successfully.

  4. Verify the filename.

  5. Check whether the file extension is correct.

My Website Still Shows the Old Page

Your browser may be displaying a cached version of your website.

Try:

  • Refreshing the page.

  • Opening the website in a private/incognito window.

  • Clearing your browser cache.

If the old page continues to appear, verify that you uploaded the new file to the correct document root.

I Uploaded My Website but It Doesn't Work

Check the following:

  • Is the website in the correct document root?

  • Does the directory contain an index.html or index.php file?

  • Did all of the website files upload successfully?

  • Are the files in the correct folder structure?

  • Are any required databases configured?

  • Are the application's configuration files correct?

If you are moving an existing application such as WordPress, simply uploading its files may not be enough. Applications that use databases also require their database to be transferred and configured.

I Uploaded a ZIP File but My Website Doesn't Work

Uploading a ZIP file does not automatically make its contents your website.

You need to extract the archive and ensure the resulting files are in the correct document root.

Check the directory structure carefully.

For example, if you see:

public_html/website/index.html

but want the site at:

https://example.com/

you may need to move the contents of website into:

public_html/

I Can't Upload a Large File

Your hosting account may have limits on upload size, PHP configuration, browser uploads, or other server-side restrictions.

If you regularly need to transfer large files or large numbers of files, consider using FTP or another supported file-transfer method.

If you believe a file should be uploadable but File Manager refuses it, contact Have Freedom Hosting Support with:

  • The filename.

  • The file size.

  • The error message.

  • A screenshot, if available.

File Manager vs. FTP

Both File Manager and FTP can be used to manage website files.

Use File Manager when:

  • You need to upload a few files.

  • You need to make a quick change.

  • You need to extract a ZIP archive.

  • You need to rename or delete files.

  • You don't want to install additional software.

Use FTP when:

  • You are transferring many files.

  • You regularly maintain website files.

  • You need to synchronize files between your computer and server.

  • You are working with a larger website.

  • You prefer using a dedicated file-transfer application.

For secure transfers, use an encrypted connection whenever supported.

Best Practices

Before making significant changes to your website:

  • Keep a current backup.

  • Verify that you are working in the correct directory.

  • Avoid deleting unfamiliar files.

  • Avoid changing permissions unless necessary.

  • Keep track of files you modify.

  • Test your website after making changes.

  • Use secure file-transfer methods whenever possible.

If you are working on a production website, consider making changes on a staging or development copy first whenever practical.

Need Help?

If you are having trouble uploading or managing your website files, Have Freedom Hosting Support can help.

When contacting support, provide:

  • The domain affected.

  • The filename or directory involved.

  • The action you were attempting to perform.
