How to Connect Your Domain to Have Freedom Hosting

How to Connect Your Domain to Have Freedom Hosting

Overview

After purchasing a hosting service, one of the first things you'll need to do is connect your domain name to your Have Freedom Hosting account.

Your domain is the address people use to visit your website, while your hosting account provides the server space where your website is stored.

For example:

Domain: example.com
Hosting: Your Have Freedom Hosting account

The two need to be connected before visitors can reach your website using your domain name.

There are several ways to accomplish this depending on where your domain is registered and how you want to manage your DNS.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

  • An active Have Freedom Hosting account

  • A registered domain name

  • Access to the account where your domain's DNS is managed

  • Your Have Freedom Hosting nameserver information, if you plan to use Have Freedom Hosting's nameservers

If your domain was purchased through Have Freedom Hosting, some of the configuration may already be handled for you.

If your domain was purchased elsewhere, you'll generally need to configure the domain with your existing registrar or DNS provider.

Option 1: Use Have Freedom Hosting Nameservers

For many customers, the simplest option is to point the domain's nameservers to Have Freedom Hosting.

Nameservers tell the internet which DNS servers are responsible for managing your domain's DNS records.

Your Have Freedom Hosting nameservers are provided with your hosting service.

They will generally look similar to:

ns1.example.com
ns2.example.com

Important: Use the exact nameservers provided for your Have Freedom Hosting account. Do not substitute the examples above.

Changing Your Nameservers

To change your domain's nameservers:

  1. Log in to the account where your domain is registered.

  2. Open your domain's management or DNS settings.

  3. Find the Nameservers section.

  4. Replace the existing nameservers with the nameservers provided by Have Freedom Hosting.

  5. Save the changes.

Once saved, your domain registrar will begin publishing the new nameserver information.

Option 2: Manage DNS Somewhere Else

You don't necessarily have to use Have Freedom Hosting's nameservers.

You can keep your domain's DNS managed by another provider and configure the appropriate DNS records to point your website toward your Have Freedom Hosting account.

This can be useful if you already use a third-party DNS provider or have other services connected to your domain.

For example, you may have separate services for:

  • Website hosting

  • Email

  • DNS management

  • Website security

  • Other applications

If you're using third-party DNS, you'll need to make sure the necessary DNS records point to the correct Have Freedom Hosting server.

Tip: If you're not familiar with DNS records, using the nameservers provided by Have Freedom Hosting may be simpler.

Nameservers vs. DNS Records

These terms are related, but they are not the same thing.

Nameservers

Nameservers tell the internet where your domain's DNS information is managed.

For example:

Domain → Nameservers → DNS provider

DNS Records

DNS records provide the actual instructions for individual services.

Common DNS records include:

  • A — Points a hostname to an IPv4 address

  • AAAA — Points a hostname to an IPv6 address

  • CNAME — Points one hostname to another hostname

  • MX — Determines where email for a domain is delivered

  • TXT — Stores text-based information used by various services

You generally don't need to understand every type of DNS record just to connect your website.

What Happens After You Change Your DNS?

DNS changes are not always immediate.

After changing your nameservers or DNS records, the new information needs to be distributed and recognized by DNS resolvers around the internet.

This process is commonly referred to as DNS propagation.

During this period, you may experience inconsistent results.

For example:

  • Your website may work for you but not someone else.

  • Your old website may still appear.

  • Your new website may appear on one device but not another.

  • Some DNS-checking tools may show the new information while others still show the old information.

This does not necessarily mean that something is wrong.

Important: Avoid repeatedly changing DNS settings while waiting for a previous change to take effect. Doing so can make troubleshooting more difficult.

How Long Does DNS Propagation Take?

There isn't one universal amount of time that every DNS change takes.

The amount of time depends on factors such as:

  • The type of change

  • DNS record TTL values

  • Your registrar or DNS provider

  • DNS caching

  • Individual DNS resolvers

Some changes may appear relatively quickly, while others can take longer.

If you've recently changed your DNS and your website isn't working yet, give the change some time before assuming that it failed.

Checking Your Domain

After configuring your domain, test it by visiting:

https://yourdomain.com

Also try:

https://www.yourdomain.com

Whether both versions work depends on your DNS and website configuration.

If the website isn't working immediately, check that:

  1. Your domain is spelled correctly.

  2. The correct nameservers or DNS records were entered.

  3. Your hosting account is active.

  4. Your domain is configured correctly within your hosting account.

  5. Enough time has passed for the DNS change to take effect.

Connecting a Domain to an Existing Website

If you're moving an existing website to Have Freedom Hosting, don't change your domain's DNS immediately unless the website files and hosting environment are ready.

A typical migration might look like:

  1. Create or activate your Have Freedom Hosting account.

  2. Upload or install your website.

  3. Verify that the website works on the new hosting environment.

  4. Confirm that your email and other required services are configured.

  5. Change the domain's DNS when you're ready to move traffic.

  6. Monitor the domain while DNS changes take effect.

  7. Keep the old hosting service available until you're confident the migration is complete.

This helps reduce the chance of unnecessary downtime.

What About Email?

Changing your domain's nameservers can also affect other services associated with the domain.

This is especially important for email.

If your email is hosted somewhere other than Have Freedom Hosting, make sure the required MX records and other email-related DNS records remain configured correctly.

Before changing nameservers for an existing website, determine:

  • Where your website is hosted

  • Where your email is hosted

  • Where your DNS is managed

  • Which services rely on your domain's DNS

Important: Changing nameservers without understanding your existing DNS configuration can unintentionally interrupt email or other services.

If you're unsure, contact Have Freedom Hosting Support before making the change.

Common Problems

My Website Still Shows My Old Website

Your DNS may still be cached, or the DNS change may not have propagated everywhere yet.

Wait for the change to propagate and test again.

My Domain Doesn't Load At All

Check that:

  • The domain is active.

  • The correct nameservers or DNS records are configured.

  • Your hosting service is active.

  • The domain is correctly configured on your hosting account.

My Website Works, but Email Stopped Working

Check your domain's MX records and other email-related DNS settings.

This can happen when nameservers are changed without recreating the DNS records required by an existing email provider.

Some People Can See My Website and Others Can't

This can happen while DNS changes are propagating or being served from different cached DNS information.

Give the changes time to propagate before making additional changes.

Before Changing DNS on an Existing Website

If your domain already has a working website or email service, don't change its DNS blindly.

Before making changes, document your current DNS configuration.

Pay particular attention to:

  • A records

  • AAAA records

  • CNAME records

  • MX records

  • TXT records

  • Any records used by third-party services

This gives you a reference point if something needs to be restored or recreated.
